Introducing SOMD Active

SMARTANews

An Advocate for Southern Maryland Non-MotorizedTransportation Needs,
SOMD Active forms to push for safe, accessible routes for pedestrians and bicyclists.

The Southern Maryland Active Recreation and Transport Alliance, the culmination of efforts by Southern Maryland conservation and organizations, aims to promote safe, abundant, and interconnected byways for non-motorized uses throughout Prince Georges, Charles, St. Mary’s, and Calvert counties. Founding organizations include the PatuxentTidewater Land Trust, the American Chestnut Land Trust, Cycling Without Age, Solomons Island Cycling, and Patuxent Adventure Center in coordination with the Southern Maryland Tri-County Council’s Bicycle Infrastructure Advisory Committee.“

Southern Maryland is at a tipping point in how it is being developed,” says SMARTA president Frank Allen, who also serves as president of PTLT. “Now is the time to ensure that regional transportation infrastructure addresses the needs of pedestrians and bicyclists. Our roadways are woefully unsafe for virtually all non-motorized users for commuting and leisure purposes. Countless other areas through out the country have already incorporated safe and easily accessible byways for people-powered users. The payoff for our region will be an immediate boost in the quality of life for all our residents.”

SMARTA’s core mission revolves around two vital objectives:

Advocacy for Active Transportation Users: SOMD Active is committed to educating local and state officials about the unique requirements of pedestrians and bicyclists during planning and development processes. By actively engaging with decision-makers, SOMD Active seeks to incorporate the necessary policies and infrastructure that support active transportation options –such as dedicated roadside trails for pedestrians and bicyclists. By doing so, the Alliance aims to enhance safety and encourage the use of non-motorized modes of transport in the region.

Uniting a Passionate Community: SOMD Active is driven by the desire to create a united community of active outdoor users who share a common passion for people-powered recreation and transportation. This alliance brings together experienced hikers and bikers as well as newcomers, fostering an environment of learning, sharing, and mutual support. By harnessing the collective strength of this diverse community, we aim to create a powerful voice advocating for sustainable and climate-friendly recreational active transportation and recreation opportunities in beautiful Southern Maryland.

SMARTA will focus on these key areas:

Trail Development and Connectivity: SOMD Active is actively involved in the creation of new and expanded trails, including highways with separated side trails along highways, and connecting communities with natural areas. The alliance believes a well-connected trail network enhances outdoor experiences and encourages active transportation choices. Studies show that most people avoid walking or bicycling because they feel unsafe with current road design. Our vision for safer roadways will increase usage by pedestrians and bicyclists.

Complete Streets: SOMD Active is working with officials to make our communities safe and accessible for walking and bicycling. This requires improved and properly maintained sidewalks and street crossings. We invite residents of Southern Maryland and beyond to join our mission to create a greener, healthier, and more vibrant community.
